THE WORST ROADS IN CAIRNS

As Cairns continues to grow at a steady rate, the main road concerns that face the locals are high speed round abouts and accidents involving cyclists. Unfortunately, the city has become known as a hotspot for fatal accidents involving cyclists; out of 41 incidents in Queensland 22 of them were in Cairns. This statistic has earned Cairns 4 out of 10 most dangerous roads for cyclists in Queensland, with the other 6 being in Brisbane. Please ensure to take great care when driving on the following four roads and keep a special lookout for cyclists-

If you are planning a trip to the beautiful tiny village of Kuranda, a town for those seeking a slower pace of life away from the big city, ensure that you give yourself enough time, as locals do tend to suffer from road rage. If a driver is following you too closely up the mountain, make sure to pull over when it’s safe to do so and let them pass. This will ensure a safe arrival to the gorgeous Kuranda for both you and the locals.

It is also important to note that the Bruce Highway in 2014 landed on the list for 25 Most Dangerous Roads in the World, along with the “Death Road” in Bolivia. One of the most dangerous stretches on the Bruce Highway is between Cairns and Innisfail with 142 casualties reported between 2005-2009. The main problem with this part of the Bruce Highway is the long straight stretches that are too inviting for high speeds. If you find yourself on this road please take your time and if needed, pull over to allow other drivers to pass. Always remember to take a break every two hours.

Our data shows that the most towed vehicles in Cairns are Holden Commodores and Ford Falcons, with the most popular days being Tuesday and Friday. If you find yourself broken down or in an accident, call your local tow truck Cairns experts to handle your vehicle with care that it deserves.

PLANNED ROAD IMPROVEMENTS

The good news is that the government has noted that the Bruce Highway is a dangerous road and has invested $38 million into improving it. The Australian and Queensland Governments have done this jointly.

Part of the funding has gone into a planning study to ensure that the right parts of the Bruce Highway are upgraded in a way that will assist the locals in their every day commute. The Cairns Bruce Highway upgrade master plan was release in 2010 and it focused on improving the safety, traffic flow and congestion in and around the city. The main focus of the study has been between Wrights Creek south of Edmonton, to Draper Street near the Cairns city centre and has taken into consideration the likely urban growth over 30 years.

The local Cairns Council has an annual budget of $9 million to spend on road improvements. Due for completion in late 2015 is the Aumuller Street upgrade, which has two major components - Aumuller/Gatton intersection and Gatton Street approaches and Aumuller Street between Gatton Street and Mulgrave Road. This upgrade will improve traffic flow and enhance road safety for all road users.
