The Worst Roads in Sydney
Some Sydney roads are well known as hotspots for congestion or accidents.
According to the first ever audit of Australia’s infrastructure, Sydney boasts seven out of the eight most congested roads in the country. The audit measured the cost of delays on Sydney roads, per kilometre, per lane, with the worst roads including:
1. Pennant Hills Road from Parramatta to Hornsby– $3.53 million
2. King Georges Road Corridor Princes Highway M4 - $2.28 million
3. Chatswood to Narraweena via Warringah Road - $2.18 million
4. Homebush Bay to Mona Vale Corridor - $1.92 million
5. Sutherland – Ryde/Parramatta Corridor (A3) - $1.77 million
6. Victoria Road (A40) Corridor - $1.73 million
7. Parramatta Road (M4) Corridor Ashfield – Strathfield - $1.64 million
Because of this heavy congestion and poor planning, more than two accidents a day occur over Sydney’s five worst crash hotspots. These areas and the number of crashes they had in 2014, according to national car insurer AAMI, are:
1. The Hume Highway at Liverpool – 209 incidents
2. The M4 Motorway at Parramatta – 176 incidents
3. Princes Highway at Rockdale – 167 incidents
4. Epping Road at North Ryde – 166 incidents
5. Pacific Highway at Chatswood – 162 incidents
TOW strongly advises all drivers to take care when travelling these routes. It is critical that you allow yourself extra time so that you aren’t tempted to take risks or drive dangerously, follow all the speed limits, and be considerate of other drivers on the road with you.
Planned Road Improvements
The NSW Government has multiple improvements planned for the next few years, to help ease congestion on Sydney’s busiest roads and improve road conditions.
$300 million has been pledged to fix 32 road corridors, including $45 million to fix major intersections, $240 million for key corridors, and $15 million to improve bus infrastructure. The projects will include improvements to the Cumberland Highway, Parramatta Road, Old Windsor Road, the Kingsway, Campbelltown Road and Hoxton Park Road. By improving these intersections, widening the roads, and lengthening and widening the turn bays, these road projects are expected to deliver an increase in average travel speeds of up to 15km/h as well as flow-on improvements to adjacent intersections.
Western Sydney will see a $3.6 billion infrastructure plan to reduce travel times and boost productivity. Road projects will include $1.1 million allocated to intersection upgrades on The Northern Road and Erskine Road, $5.8 million to the Cumberland Highway, $5.7 million to Wetherill Street and $17.5 million to Eagle Vale Drive.
The Sydney City Centre Capacity Improvement Plan will focus on 17 road infrastructure projects in the Sydney CBD, from Broadway to Circular Quay. It will modify and realign traffic lanes, introduce changes to kerbside users, adjust kerbs, and modify or remove some on-street parking, to help increase vehicle flow and reduce traffic build-up.
These planned road improvements will make travelling around Sydney much safer and more efficient for drivers. However, we advise you to continue to take special care when travelling heavily congested and accident-prone areas while these improvements are underway.
