Sitting about 200km west of Sydney in the Central Tablelands, Bathurst is the oldest inland settlement in Australia and home to more than 41,000 residents. It is also the seventh fastest growing regional city in New South Wales, with a steadily increasing population every year and a subsequent rise in urban development, housing estates and industrial areas. This unavoidably results in increasingly busier roads in and around Bathurst, a build-up of traffic on local roads and highways, and more congestion and road accidents.
So when you need assistance, TOW provides round the clock towing Bathurst wide to get you and your vehicle off the road quickly and efficiently. Our 24 hour call centre is available to dispatch a tow truck to your location, at any time of the day or night.

The Worst Roads in Bathurst
As a busy regional highway hub, Bathurst has a number of local roads and highways which are known for their poor quality and heavy congestion. It is extremely important that you take special care when travelling on these especially dangerous routes, pay close attention to the road and drive to suit the conditions. Plan your route accordingly to avoid taking risks and driving dangerously, especially if you are travelling on roads known for congestion which will increase your travel time.
Poorer quality roads require even more care and consideration, and TOW strongly advises that you always keep to the speed limits and be mindful of other drivers sharing the road with you.
The Great Western Highway between Bathurst and the Blue Mountains is an important and frequently used transport link between Sydney and Bathurst. It has been called out for a number of issues including its poor road surfaces, lack of lanes, changing speed zones and general congestion.
The Bells Line is another frequently travelled stretch of road; an alternative route for motorists travelling between Sydney and Bathurst to avoid the Great Western Highway. However this road also has its own problems including heavy congestion and poor quality road surfaces, and is regularly listed in the top 10 of the state’s worst roads.
The Bridle Track is a 4WD track running from Duramana, northwest of Bathurst, to Hill End. This single lane, narrow gravel road has a steep cliff drop-off on one side, no guard rails, steep edges and inclines, and loose gravel surfaces. It becomes very slippery in the rain, and includes creek crossings, flood ways and is prone to flash flooding. This stretch of road is extremely dangerous and should only be attempted by 4WD vehicles.
Planned Road Improvements
The Great Western Highway has been recognised as in severe need of quality and safety improvements, and the Federal Government together with NSW Roads and Maritime have pledged a total of $250 million to upgrade the length of the highway from Katoomba to Lithgow.
The planned upgrades will significantly improve road safety, reduce congestion, improve intersection arrangements and better accommodate for future residential, commercial and industrial development of the local area. The features of the upgrade will include:
Widening the road to 2 lanes in some sections and 3 in others, and adding shoulder/parking lanes on both sides of the highway
Widening travel lanes and shoulders
Improving the kerbs and guttering
Upgrading intersections with traffic lights, roundabouts and right turn bays
Improving landscaping for better visibility
Improving road alignment
Improving traffic management and traffic controllers
These planned improvements to the highway are expected to make the road much safer for drivers travelling the popular route. However TOW strongly advises that you continue to take extra care on the highway and drive safely while the upgrades are being made.
